Do You Need Brake Service?
Do you need brake service? Do you know how you would know if you do? During Car Care Month, we wanted to review brakes basics. Let’s face it, properly functioning brakes are critically important to your personal safety.
First, brake pads sit on each side of the rotor. When you apply the brakes, the pads contact the rotor to stop the car. If the pads wear down too far, it will damage your rotors. Rotors can also warp over time due to the heat caused by braking. With proper maintenance, these can be resurfaced rather than replaced.
We are often asked how long brakes last. This depends solely on your driving habits and how often you brake. How long do you keep your foot on the pedal when coming to a stop? City driving and mountains are harder on brakes. Brakes may need to be replaced as early as 40,000 miles or could last for 70,000 miles. If you hear loud squeaking or grinding noises when you brake, it’s time for a checkup.
We measure brake thickness on every service visit. If the gauge reads 3 millimeter, it’s time to have your brake pads replaced. If you do need brakes, this is not the place to cut corners. You do not want to use aftermarket brake parts. Genuine Kia Parts is essential for the safe operation of your vehicle as they are engineered to the exact specifications of your car. There is a big difference between OEM (original equipment manufacturer) brake pads and aftermarket. Aftermarket brake pads may be less expensive but inferior quality may result in performance issues, noise, premature wear of the pads and rotors, and  brake dust build up . You can also be certain that brake work is performed by Kia Trained & Certified Technicians.
