EV9 Developer Insights

The Kia EV9, as the first electric three-row SUV produced in Korea, has captured the world’s attention. With its striking design, powerful capabilities, and family-focused functionality the EV9 proves that thoughtful design makes an impact. The Korean development team leaders behind the EV9 have shared their thoughts on what makes the vehicle special and what unique mobility experiences it provides. This interview features thoughts from the following members of the EV9 development team: Senior researcher Kim Pyoung, researcher Park Soo-jeong, researcher Lee Hee-chan, senior researcher Kim Tae-hyun, senior researcher Kim Hyun-wook.

Q: What is the EV9’s role in Kia’s electrified model lineup?

A: We aimed to make this vehicle uniquely driver-centric yet capable of accommodating all members of the family. So we set the concept of the EV9 as “my own SUV for my own family” This reflects the driver’s individual taste and personality while providing a relaxed space and various values for the family as a family car. Based on this concept, the EV9 evolved into an all-around electric SUV. We focused on the large-capacity battery, flat floor, and SUV performance. We emphasized the strong style and usability of the second and third-row spaces.

Q: Electric cars are becoming larger. Is the EV9 the result of these electric car trends?

A: Because of the high price in the early days of the electric car market, many automakers developed compact cars focused on commuters. Recently, EVs have been getting bigger as technology advances and price barriers decrease. The EV9 features a large-capacity battery suitable for a large body, an overwhelming driving range, and a spacious interior that comfortably accommodates all family members.
The EV9 is the most innovative model pioneering new territory and a new flagship model representing Kia’s electrification lineup. The existing EV6 signaled a new beginning for Kia, and the EV9 is a milestone marking the transformation of the Kia brand into electrification.

Q: While developing the EV9, what did you emphasize while keeping competitors in mind?

A: The EV9 is the first electric SUV in the world that even considers the space in the third row. It maximizes interior space and utility and also emphasizes the individuality of the Kia electrification brand by generously using the iconic details and future-oriented design of Kia’s EV models.  The EV9 was developed in line with the concept of “a new experience that completely changes the meaning and method of movement.” The progressive design, innovative space, and cutting-edge technology will set a new standard for the global electric vehicle market. If customers experience the EV9 first-hand, they will see that it is not just a means of transportation, but that it expands the boundaries of our lives and inspires us.

Q: What did you focus on to develop the EV9 as a versatile family car?

A: We considered various scenarios such as a space for relaxation, a space for conversation, a space for outdoor activity, and a space for watching movies or playing video games. We wanted to adapt to existing customers of non-electric cars, by offering an appealing interior space. The direction of the User Experience (UX) was focused on the concept of “Room for Discovery.” This meant the EV9 became a vehicle “full of new discoveries for me and my family” and “provides a mobility life space shared with the family.”
When you step into the EV9, you’ll find convenience features not only for the driver, but for all occupants. The vehicle features a drawer-like extended console for passengers in the second row. Many things can be stored here, such as a tablet PC. The adjustable table on the console can be used for food and drink, or even watch movies on your tablet.

Q: What makes the EV9 different from traditional non-electric SUVs?

A: Internal combustion engine vehicles typically have higher indoor floor height in the second row due to the fuel tank. But the EV9 secured legroom and headroom by implementing a flat floor. Additionally, various seats slide and swivel to provide extra comfort.  In addition, EV9 customers can enjoy the specialized specifications of our EV models. For example, when camping you can power various devices by using the EV9’s battery. The electronic hood latch can also be remotely opened with a smart key and the Kia Connect app.

Q: What was the thought behind designing a second row of seats that swivel, recline, and include massage functions?
A: The second-row swivel seat that can rotate 180 degrees is an iconic dedicated specification of the EV9. The EV9 also includes a premium relaxation seat that provides a pleasant and comfortable seating experience and a dynamic massage function.  It was easy to accomplish making the EV9 the first electric SUV to house a swivel seat.  One issue usually comes from armrest interference, so we designed a hinge that can rotate the armrest for a safe swivel. This experience also allows owners to enjoy a sunset view from the rear of the car, or even make a cinema space by using a projector.

Q: What were the biggest considerations when designing the second and third-row spaces?
A:  The interior of the EV9 has been tuned to ensure a sense of openness, such as mesh headrests for the first-row seats and a lowering height of the door belt line. Effort was also made to make the EV9 convenient to interact with while is is being driven. This meant setting the control panel and storage space in a reachable area for passengers. Convenience functions such as independent controls for second and third-row air conditioning, diffused roof vents, dual-color ambient lights, and tailgate switches on the luggage side trim are all parts that reflect careful design.
