How To: Check Tire Pressure
The weather is changing and it’s important to check your tire pressure. Checking to see if your tires are overinflated or underinflated is critical to car performance. Optimal tire pressure can prevent a flat tire or blowout. Ensuring your tires are properly inflated can also help maximize your gas mileage on longer trips.
Checking the tire pressure on all of your tires is something you can easily do yourself. Take a moment to look at the steps below to check tire pressure:
- Make sure you have a tire pressure gauge. They’re cost-effective and easy to store in your glove compartment whenever you may need it.
- Check the door jam when you open your car door to see what the PSI (pounds per square inch) numbers are. Your car manual will also have the numbers. Most passenger cars recommend a tire pressure between 30 and 35 PSI.
- Remove the valve stem cap.
- Put the gauge on the valve stem and you will immediately see what the tire pressure level is. Be sure to check all four tires and the spare.
- Look for a service station with an air compressor to add or remove air to equalize the pressure in all four tires.
