Kia Georgia Plant Plans Expansion
Kia Georgia Plant Plans Expansion to Accommodate EV9 Production
Kia’s West Point Assembly Plant in Georgia currently manufactures and assembles four Kia models:
The assembly plant is undergoing a transformation that will make room for the assembly of Kia’s all-electric 2024 EV9, a three-row SUV. The expansion should allow for the assembly of the new electric vehicle in the second quarter of 2024.
This expansion is expected to be $200 million and will create nearly 200 additional jobs in West Point, Georgia’s surrounding area.
“Like Telluride, EV9 has the potential to be another ‘game changer’ for Kia,” said Sean Yoon, President & COO, Kia North America and Kia America. “This will be the most sophisticated vehicle that we have ever built and will be a standout in the EV market and on the road. Best of all, it will be assembled in West Point, Georgia.”
What to Expect With the EV9
The EV9 is incredibly spacious and built for premium comfort, well-being, and technology for everyone, not just the driver. With all three rows of seats up, the new electric SUV offers 20 cubic feet of cargo space and 82 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded down.
Second-row seats can be turned to a full 180 degrees to face the back row, allowing for a meeting room-like environment.
You can charge and power up equipment when on a road trip. The EV9’s Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU), includes Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, enabling energy to be discharged from the vehicle battery. Customers can use up to 3.68 kW of power from the EV9 to charge laptops or power camping equipment. With an average laptop charger consuming around 65 watts, a tablet charger utilizing 30 watts, and a smart phone charger typically drawing 10 watts, the EV9 has the ability to power electronics for extended periods of up to several days. Much larger devices can be powered too, such as an electric grill, which typically uses around 1500 watts and an outdoor projector, which uses around 200 watts.
Great driving and safety technology is a standard to prevent potential collisions with other drivers and feel comfortable while on the road.
Offered with an all-electric WLTP target range of more than 336 miles on a single charge, the EV9 is engineered to enable families to undertake lengthy road trips, even through remote areas with little charging infrastructure, with full confidence. And when the time does come to stop and recharge the vehicle’s batteries, it doesn’t need to be for a long time, thanks to the SUV’s ultra-fast charging capability. The technology allows for a charging time of 15 minutes, providing a driving range of up to 148 miles, and a 10-80% battery state of charge in under 25 minutes.
Excited for the Future
The EV9 will be the first EV for Kia to be assembled in North America and combines all the best SUV elements of the award-winning Telluride with the best EV elements of the award-winning EV6. The EV9 will mix capability with technology and refined elegance.
At Kia Country of Charleston, we’re excited for this expansion and the growth of the company to make more Kia models in the United States.
