Kia Responds to Vehicle Thefts
A YouTube challenge caused Kia & Hyundai thefts to surge in the past year by demonstrating how to break the under-dash panel and use a USB cord to start the car.
Kia has issued Kia Anti-Theft Logic software updates for the Sorento, Sportage, K5, and Optima. This does NOT apply to all vehicles.
- If your vehicle has a push-button start, you do not need this.
- If your vehicle has a remote start, the software is currently not compatible with your vehicle.
- If your vehicle starts with a key, please check with our Service Department to see if your VIN# is approved for the update.
Currently, the software is being provided at no charge, so we encourage you to call soon to determine eligibility and schedule service. You should have received a letter from Kia if your car qualifies for the update.
The update consists of anti-theft ignition start logic to the vehicle’s system operation and applying window decals to both front windows to indicate that anti-theft software has been installed.
Kia responded by saying, “All 2022 models and trims have an immobilizer applied either at the beginning of the year or as a running change. All Kia vehicles for sale in the U.S. meet or exceed Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards,” the statement reads. The manufacturer encouraged Kia customers to contact the Consumer Assistance Center at 1-800-333-4542 with questions. Kia promised to make engine immobilizing standard on all new models.
We have no additional information regarding other models currently but will announce any that become available.
