Totally Chill: Know Your Coolant System
It’s Week One of Car Care Month we are focusing on the coolant system. Why? Most of the energy from your engine is converted into heat and your car’s cooling system dissipates that heat and keeps the engine from overheating. The radiator and its reservoir hold a 50/50 mix of coolant and water which circulates through the engine and keeps it from overheating or freezing.
Build up and clogs in your cooling system can cause severe overheating which could lead to a blown cylinder head gasket or other major repairs. How do you know if you need a coolant system service? We recommend having it inspected annually. A full system coolant service with fluid replacement is recommended every 45-60 thousand miles depending on the climate.
Fall is an excellent time of year to have a coolant system service. Coolant also acts as anti-freeze so it is important to make sure your engine is protected before the cold weather arrives. There are two types of services
- Open the radiator valve, drain half the fluid and replace with new coolant
- Complete fluid exchange which pulls coolant not only from the radiator but from the engine block and heating system where it can also accumulate (recommended)
