Vending Machine Cars
Cars are Not Twinkies
What is your favorite vending machine item? Doritos? Pop-Tarts? Twinkies? Cars? Have you ever put your money into the machine and watched as the bag gets stuck? Put your money in only to have the wrong item drop? Put your money in and nothing comes out? Put your money in to get a stale or expired treat? Have you ever bought a sandwich from a vending machine? What was your confidence in the age, and quality of the sandwich? Would you consider purchasing something from a USED food vending machine? Who do you talk to when something goes awry? The machine? The invisible “vending machine company”?
Cars are not Twinkies. That said, there are companies out there right now that will literally sell you a car out of an actual vending machine. You never have to talk to anyone or go to a dealership. You select, purchase and finance a car online and delivery person will bring you the car with a smile and a bottle of water in the cup holder. These companies tout never going to a dealership, cost savings, and easy financing as their strengths. On the surface, it sounds as appealing as your favorite candy beckoning you from the candy machine.
But what do you do if you have a question? Or you want to negotiate the price or some other element of the transaction? Have you ever read the back of a finance contract or purchase agreement? Who do you call if there is a service issue? We are pretty sure vending machines never talk back. A $30,000 car is not the same as a bag of Doritos. You can’t reach in your pockets for another $30,000 and choose another car as if the “Doritos” were crushed in the bag.
Have you ever purchased a pre-owned car or truck? Was it perfect? Did you have questions about it afterward? How some of the features worked or were supposed to work, or thought it had features it didn’t?
We are empathetic to customers who may have had a bad experience buying a car or who do not trust the process. We know that the average age of vehicles on the road is over 10 years and on average people buy a new car every 5-10 years. We think it is perfectly reasonable to be uncomfortable doing something once a decade.
The fact is the car business and cars have changed dramatically in recent years. From the amount of information available online to rapidly evolving engineering and technology. And it continues to change each year. A 10 year-old-car is to a new car as the Flinstone’s car is to the Jetsons.

We also know that we will experience your wrath if things don’t end up how they should have. Our livelihoods and reputations are at stake and are as important to us as your money is to you. We understand the appeal of vending machines, but we also understand that each customer and transaction are unique and that is never going to be something that can be handled with a click of a button.
