What Does Memorial Day Mean?
What does Memorial Day mean? For most of us it is the official start of summer. It’s a day off, blockbuster sales, picnics and parades. Those are all things we look forward to and enjoy.
It is also important at some point over the long holiday weekend to take time to honor those that have lost their lives in service to our country. Memorial Day presents an opportunity for us to all come together. On Memorial Day it does not matter if we are Democrats or Republicans, Christians or atheists, black or white, pro-war or anti-war. It only matters that we are Americans, and that so much of what we enjoy and take for granted was made possible by those who served and paid the ultimate sacrifice.
How many of us have had the courage to fight in a war? Often referred to as heroes, these sons, daughters, parents and friends deserve our gratitude. Whether you remember a loved one, visit a Veteran’s memorial, fly the flag or say a prayer—find your own way to pause and remember.
Like most businesses, we will be celebrating with a mega-sale and hoping for a big weekend. But we wanted to take time to recognize that this weekend is so much more. We acknowledge our employees, relatives and customers who have served in the United Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines and Navy.
We remember those who have died in that service. And we thank them.
