Matte Paint Care Instructions
Kia entered the luxury paint world which means matte paint and matte paint means special care instructions. Â Many luxury brands like BMW and Mercedes offer special paints to create unique, exclusive looks. Matte paint finishes are usually only offered on specific upgraded models.
The 2022 Kia EV6 and the all-new 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid offer a matte paint option now. This paint finish does require special care instructions. It differs from traditional gloss paint. The unique matte finish is low gloss due to diffused light reflection. In other words, it has a flat finish and doesn’t shine. The painting process is similar to normal two-stage paint, except the clear coat top layer is designed to look flat. It must be hand washed with special cleaners to properly maintain the finish.
Here are some tips from KIA for maintaining the matte finish.
Matte paint cannot be rubbed with a cloth or abrasive material that could polish the paint. In fact, no rubbing at all is advised. The vehicles must be hand washed with soft wash mitts. Do not subject the finish to automatic car washes with brushes to avoid scratching the paint. Use a detergent specially formulated for matte paint. Spot clean with this detergent prior to washing if needed. Pressure washing hoses may cause damage to the paint, however, if you use a fan nozzle, keep the pressure under 2500 PSI, and stand a minimum of ten inches from the vehicle you may use a pressure washer.
Kia recommends testing all products on a hidden surface such as under the rocker sills to make sure they do not alter the appearance of the matte paint. After washing a vehicle with a matte paint finish, dry the paint with a damp, clean chamois. Do not let water spots form. Pull the chamois across the paint with light pressure.
